I like the two-party system for our Republic. The fact is that Independent "third" parties tend to be single issue parties that should be incorporated into the two party system platforms -- and will be if their issue is significant enough to warrant it. In the current election there are two additional viable candidates for President, but their issues will garner less than 7% of the vote. The last time I voted my conscience I was a John Anderson Republican (the only time I ever voted for a Republican for President). By doing so I sent two messages: (1) that Anderson had at least one progressive follower and (2) I was too stupid to realize that a Republican was a Republican, no matter what they claimed they stood for. All I succeed in doing was let the Republican Party splinter the Democratic Party that year. United we stand, divided we fall.
"Third" party candidates can get elected: see Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Jessie Ventura, D.P. Moynahan, Joe Lieberman, James Jeffords, Bernie Sanders. They just have to be strong enough to be able to play in the Big Leagues with the heavy hitters...
